About Qasr Qarun
Qasr Qarun is an ancient Greco-Roman temple located on the western edge of the Fayoum Oasis, near Lake Qarun. Originally known as Dionysias, the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and later associated with Greco-Roman religious traditions.
Built from massive limestone blocks, Qasr Qarun is famous for its mysterious inner corridors, hidden chambers, and remarkable solar alignment, when sunlight penetrates the sanctuary during the winter solstice. Surrounded by open desert landscapes, the site feels remote and atmospheric — offering visitors a quiet, almost cinematic journey into Egypt’s layered past.
Perfect for history lovers and adventure seekers alike, Qasr Qarun provides a rare glimpse into Egypt’s Greco-Roman era far from crowded tourist routes.
