About Shali Fortress
Shali Fortress is the historic heart of Siwa Oasis, rising above the oasis as a dramatic mud-brick citadel built in the 13th century. Constructed from a unique mix of salt, clay, and rock known locally as kershef, Shali once served as a fortified town protecting Siwa’s residents from desert raids.
Today, its atmospheric ruins invite visitors to wander through narrow alleys, crumbling stairways, and ancient homes while enjoying sweeping views over palm groves and salt lakes. At sunset, the fortress glows in warm golden tones, making it one of Siwa’s most photogenic and peaceful spots.
A visit to Shali Fortress offers a powerful glimpse into traditional oasis life and architecture — where history, desert silence, and breathtaking scenery come together.
